Betty Smith

Defined by its historic rail yards and bushland backdrop, Valley Heights combines industrial character with creative adaptability. It's a place where past and present meet — and where a growing community of MTNS MADE creatives are producing bold, grounded work.

The area is home to painters, ceramicists, teachers, illustrators, musicians, and craft practitioners. Some work from home studios or converted garages; others collaborate from local creative spaces or deliver programs in schools and community venues.

Valley Heights offers a practical and down-to-earth energy. Its accessibility — just off the highway and rail line — makes it ideal for creatives working in both regional and urban contexts. The area’s heritage infrastructure has also inspired a number of visual responses in painting, photography, and sculpture.

With easy connections to Springwood and beyond, Valley Heights is a vital link in the lower mountains creative network.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
