Quick

project description

When I wrote 'Quick' I felt like time was marching ahead of me and I was standing still. And even though I was stuck, change was happening without my intention or consent. Time was robbing me of parts of myself. Quick is about this experience of change, and the loss, grief, resistance, nostalgia and acceptance that comes with it.

I made the video many years after writing the song, at a time in my life when it resonated with me in a new way: the year my youngest child started school. A quiet had set in, and I found that I could no longer recognise myself. I could only define myself by what I was not: no longer a woman without children, no longer a mother of babies or toddlers. The early years of parenthood had transformed me while my attention was tirelessly elsewhere. I didn't set out to make a video that represented this, but in hindsight, that's what I was doing: bringing some new purpose to my days and processing all that I was feeling... The immense grief and joy of this next big change, and the understanding that with every loss was the potential for something new to emerge. I hope the video shows all the beauty in that. I created the video under my house with a light box, tripod, camera and hundreds of leaves, followed by a crash course DIY-style in Premiere Pro. There are over 2200 photos in it. ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
