DiG Project - Urban Futures

project description

As part of the DiG Project for Penrith City Council in 2018, I collaborated with four other creatives (two composers, a cinematographer and a video artist) to devise a creative project, Urban Futures (2018) to highlight the effects of heat and climate change in one of the hottest regions of the state. Collectively we conceived a three-part video and music presentation that stressed the advantages of tree canopy cover, utilising the capabilities of each music composer in seperate sections accompanied by compelling video footage. I worked in close collaboration with visual digital artist Neil Hawkins to conceive of the central ‘Urban Jungle’ sequence that visually echoed the effect of heat maps and thermal imaging by employing 1980s-themed ‘vapour wave’ imagery designed by Neil, combined with my own music composition that drew on urban and cultural influences of the area.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
