Artist, Curator, Educator, Visual Arts Programs, Creative Consultant
Education, Photography, Visual Arts
As an artist, curator and art educator for over 27 years, working in both Australia and internationally, my work is comprised of multi-disciplinary research and creative practice, curation, organisational development and leadership, art education, public programming and audience development. I deliver contemporary art projects that expand our understanding of drawing and painting, by focusing on expressions of materiality, colour, and the process of the creative act.
In 2013 I co-established Single Track Gallery on the remote Hebridean Isle of Skye (Scotland), where I lived and worked between 2009-2014. During this time I was Head of Art and Design at the University of the Highlands and Islands – West Highland College. Here, I developed numerous innovative, cross-disciplinary art courses, recognised as models of best-practice by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education UK, across five regional centres throughout the Highlands. I forged strong partnerships with artists, galleries and leading art institutions in Australia and internationally. As Vice Chair, and an active member of ATLAS Arts (Isle of Skye), an ambitious contemporary arts organisation, I supported the commissioning and delivery of creative projects by significant international artists, that were realised within Skye’s unique landscape. www.atlasarts.org.uk
Since 2017, I have been an elected committee member of contemporary art organisation Modern Art Projects Blue Mountains, and have served on the grants committee of Blue Mountains City of The Arts Trust.
I hold a Master of Art (With Excellence) from the University of New South Wales Art and Design, which culminated in a large- scale, multi-disciplinary solo exhibition at Kudos Gallery, Sydney, in 2017. I also hold a Bachelor of Education.
I have extensive arts and educational experience in a range of cultural and academic settings, and have developed content for nationally-accredited arts and education curricular frameworks.
I am currently in the process of developing a regional collaborative project for an artist-run initiative in the Blue Mountains, focusing on people and place, that will commission artists to create socially-engaged contemporary art projects within – and with -communities, for the development of cultural wellbeing.
My creative research and practice distills sensory experiences of place, and materiality, into pure, abstracted, visual form. It centres on extraction, production, exploration and manipulation of pure colour, and materials, engaging deeply with site and situation. My inquiry results in assemblages of found objects, films, photographs, paintings, collage, cast and painted beeswax works. Drawn from investigation of (and immersion in) natural, industrial, or personal domestic environments, the works concentrate intimate, visceral experiences into their most essential, tactile qualities. Surfaces are sensual, quiet and meditative, containing potent environmental residue. They are often time-worn, revealing subtle marks from years of human intervention.
I reference formal codes of minimalism, abstraction, and colour field painting, and engage in expanded drawing through mark-making in three-dimensional space.
