Belle is a writer, singer-songwriter, photographer, mother, daydreamer, people-watcher and veggie-patch wrangler.
Belle was recently awarded an Emerging Writers Fellowship with Westwords and will spend the next 6 months finishing up the next draft of her novel ‘White Pigeon’ under the guidance of a mentor. She continues to experiment with photo-fiction, and she is working on a multi-faceted project on misogyny – Project I Am She. The project uses music and photo narrative to expose and combat all forms of misogyny and gender-based discrimination and abuse.
Belle’s debut single, I Am She, is a response to personal and witnessed experiences of misogyny and gender-based abuse. Equally devastating and empowering, the lyrics expose many different experiences of ‘she’ – She who has been called a bitch, a cow, a slut, feisty, hysterical. The Valkyrie. She who has been wolf-whistled, watched, and waited for. Who has been touched, unwantedly. Who has been trapped, helplessly. She who has had to run, had to hide. Had to look down, look away. She who has seen, heard, bore witness to the many others. She who was raped. She who only just got away. She who didn’t. She, on the news, in the papers, online, finally found, her body in a lane, in a park, in a pond. She who knew the man coming for her. She who didn’t.
